About What Katie Did

What Katie Did was founded 1999 by Katie Thomas and today is the world's leading brand of faux vintage lingerie, specialising in recreating silver screen glamour of the '40s and '50s.

How it all started

" I first became interested in vintage fashion in my mid teens. A visit to London's Kensington Market, which at that point was filled with fashions from the 1940s and 1950s, really was a life changing experience for me. Whilst outer garments were easy to find, vintage lingerie was not, and as I got more obsessed with the 1940s and 1950s I realised that the right lingerie was an integral part of getting the look.

By this time I was living in London and would scour Portobello Road Market on Fridays and would occasionally find a great piece, but more often than not, the size would be wrong and it would be well worn. Despite exclaiming to my friends that 'little dead old ladies have all the best stuff' I had to admit that there is something icky about wearing someone else's lingerie."

Katie Thomas is an expert on lingerie from the '40s and '50s and has been called upon to authenticate lingerie once owned by Marilyn Monroe by NBC and ITN news. She has also been interviewed by The Times, The Daily Telegraph and The Daily Mail on corsets and waist training. In 2011 she was nominated for Cosmopolitan magazine's Businesswoman of the Year.

Our Products

"It's extremely important to me that not only does out lingerie make you look as good as possible, but is comfortable throughout the day. Quality is something I won't skimp on: we use spiral steel boning in all of our shapewear, just like they did in the 1950s, to ensure that your lingerie lasts. It's the little touches that make the difference. You might not realise that our bra adjusters are nylon coated, but you will notice a brand that uses painted or plastic adjusters that can chip or snap after a few wears.

Most of our lingerie is made in India, in a factory we have bene working with for 15 years. My close relationship with the factory, and our team of tailors, means that not only is our lingerie made to the highest standards, but enables me to keep a close eye on how the factory is run. While you won't find bargain basement prices at What Katie Did you can rest assured that your lingerie is made ethically.

In 2014 we started manufacturing a small amount of lingerie in the UK, while our mules  are made in China for us by Miss L-Fire who spend a lot of time in their overseas factories."
